The title of the exhibition, SUBURB, is a reference to its location in Breiðholt, which is the oldest planned suburb in Reykjavík. Breiðholt is the most populated and most diverse residential neighbourhood in the city. It has the highest number of villas in a single neighbourhood in Reykjavík, the highest number of apartment buildings and also the highest ratio of people of foreign origin. The different cultures add to its diversity and enrichen the daily life, but the neighbourhood’s man-made and natural environment, along with its history, create a frame around the everyday activities of the people. The exhibition SUBURB examines how the public spaces in the neighbourhood integrate its people’s social and cultural needs. The artists look to Breiðholt’s history, examine the boundaries between man-made and natural environment and some of them also to work with the locals.
